Presidents Day Read Aloud

Happy Presidents Day!  Most likely your kids are home from school, and if you are a stay-at-home mom you may be scratching your head for things you and the kids can do today.  Some of the usual places are closed due to the holiday, but one fun idea is to have some special reading time!  Either browsing your shelves or visiting a bookstore (second hand is great) choose some books that are of interest to your kids.  Set aside some time where you can all read quietly together, and resist the urge to jump up and do the dishes.  Let the kids see YOU enjoying your book at least as much as they are enjoying theirs.  The idea is to give them the feeling that reading is a treat not a chore.

Another great option is to do a read aloud together.  Younger kids might enjoy The Borrowers, The Mouse on the Motorcycle, or The Magic Tree House while older children will listen to A Wrinkle in Time or The Mysterious Benedict Society.  No matter what their interests, there is probably a book out there to lure them in.  I remember being a little girl taking great pleasure in a read alound with my mom.  My older brother would mysteriously hang around as my book was being read.  He always found something "to do" during the readings, but I know it was really the book he was enjoying. The lure of a good story is hard to dismiss!
